What exactly is Natural Cosmetics?
Natural cosmetics generally referrs to ingredients that come from the earth in either plant or mineral form. Our cosmetics consist primarily of natural minerals mined from the earth. These minerals do have to go through a cleansing and purification process to be suitable for use in cosmetics. We source our ingredients from suppliers in the USA, acording to FDA standards.
Do You Test On Animals?
We absolutely would NEVER test on an animal. First, there is no need since our ingredients are natural. Secondly, we love animals! Our company is registered with PETA as a company that does not test on animals. If we ever need a product wear tested, like our skin care line, we have a long list of human volunteers that gladly participate.
Do You Ship to My Country?
We ship around the globe to every country that we are allowed to ship to. You can view our shipping rates here
What's the SPF in Your Makeup?
Even though our Valley Girl and Hollywood mineral foundations have a high percentage of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, we do not claim a specific SPF. Why not? Well there is no way to determine how much foundation a person applies. So there is really no fair way to claim a sunscreen rating. Companies that do claim it do not tell you how much you have to apply for that sunscreen protection! However, it appears our mineral foundation is doing a swelll job in the sun. We had this recent comment on our Facebook Page:
Have You Noticed?
Almost every cosmetic company has jumped on the band wagon and now offers their version of Mineral Makeup. Why? Because pure, and natural mineral makeup has been getting rave reviews from women who love the coverage, feel, natural look, purity, and simplicity of mineral makeup. They also love not breaking out from wearing makeup to cover blemishes. This can become a vicious circle with "regular" liquid and cream makeup. You break out, so you put on more makeup, which makes you break out more! This is NOT the case with mineral makeup, at least not LA Minerals makeup!
Don't be fooled by the name "Mineral Makeup."
Take a few moments the next time you are at the drug store to read the labels. Granted, ingredient labels can be overwhelming and confusing. But if you can't pronounce it, chances are it's a chemical! There's a lot of companies using the catch phrase "made with pure minerals." The word WITH is really important. What else is WITH the minerals is what you need to be careful of. You can make lawn fertilizer WITH minerals, but is it good for your face?
Also, the FDA requires ingredient labels to be listed in order of predominance. The first ingredient comprises the largest percent in that product. If the first ingredient in the mineral makeup you pick up at the store says "Talc," then talc makes up the bulk of that product. Companies are not required to list or divulge specific percents, as that would give away their formulas. However, armed with a little knowledge about minerals and ingredient lists, you can shop smarter and safer.
So, what are minerals?
Minerals, as defined by wikipedia are: a naturally occurring substance formed through geological processes that has a characteristic chemical composition, a highly ordered atomic structure and specific physical properties.
Minerals used in makeup vary in their appearance and function. Take Sericite Mica for example. It is basically a mineral "filler" in natural cosmetics. It lets the formulator spread otu or disperse the pigment and other minerals. Now for some reason the blogging world has made a "filler" seem like a bad thing, when in fact it's not. Let me give you this easy example: Say you are painting a pastel picture. Are you going to use primary colors? Solid RED, BLUE, YELLOW, GREEN? Probably not...so you mix them with white to get a nice pastel pink or lavendar. A filler in mineral makeup does the same thing!
Not Every Mineral is a Good One for Your Face!
Some minerals are just not good to put on your face. Talc is best left to be used in body powders and on babys bottoms. While it's silky and smooth, it can cause you to breakout if applied to your face regularly. Hence, we don't use it.
Here's an even worse mineral....
Bismuth: a chemical element that has the symbol Bi and atomic number 83. This heavy, brittle, white crystalline trivalent poor metal has a pink tinge and chemically resembles arsenic and antimony. Of all the metals, it is the most naturally diamagnetic, and only mercury has a lower thermal conductivity.
Bismuth compounds, Bismuth Oxychloride are used in cosmetics and in medical procedures. As the toxicity of lead has become more apparent in recent years, alloy uses for bismuth metal as a replacement for lead have become an increasing part of bismuth's commercial importance.
Most of the well known brands of mineral makeup contain bismuth oxychloride in their products, including mineral foundations, "warmth", eyeshadow, blush and bronzers.
You will NEVER find this ingredient in ANY of our products!
Why not? Although technically made from a mineral, bismuth oxychloride is a heavy metal that causes itching, redness, enlarged pores, and after long term use can cause cystic acne.
If you have any questions about makeup, makeup ingredients, even other brands, feel free to reach out to us. Our CEO, Lorraine Pierce, has years of cosmetic formulating experience and will be happy to answer any of your techy questions.
