Aloe Vera

(Aloe Barbadensis)

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera Barbadensis may look like a cactus but actually it's a member of the lily family close cousins to the garlic, onion, and asparagus. Aloe vera is a stemless succulent perennial herb growing from 50 cm for up to 100 cm tall.

It is green or grey-green in color with some classes exhibiting semi-opaque white spots at the base of the leaves. The leaves are very thick because they have a colourless, mucilaginous gel inside

Aloe Vera contains a veritable cornucopia of nutrition including essential amino acids and protein - the basic building blocks of skin and hair.

Our Aloe Vera is produce of the USA.

Amla

(Emblica Officinalis)
aka: Nelli, Amalaki, Indian Gooseberry, Amla in Hindi , Amalaka in Sanskrit , Amlaki in Bengali, Nellikkai in Kannada, Amala in the Nepali language

Amla Fruit, Indian Gooseberry
What is it?
Amla is the most common ingredient used in Indian medicine and hair care tonics. Amla fruits are also used in the culinary world for pickling, making jams and juices. Amla fruit is a major food source for the wild animals of India like the barking deer, bear and macaque to name a few. The Amla fruit is highly prized in Ayurvedic medicine for its properties and is harvested in the elevated dry deciduous forest region of India. Each Amla berry is picked by hand, left to dry in the sun, then ground by hand into powder form. Amla's dark tan colour is known to add a supple cool brown colour to fair curly hair.

Botanical Facts:
The Amla tree belongs to a tropical plant family called the Phyllanthus of which there are two varieties:
- Emblica - has an unrestricted distribution worldwide.
- Indofischeri Bennet - has a restricted distribution.

Beeswax

(Cera Flava)

Beeswax
A by product of the honey comb.
Beekeepers cut off the wax caps of the honeycomb cell to collect the beeswax. Beeswax varies in colour from yellowish to brownish depending on the flowering sap gathered by the bees and its associated purity. Our beeswax has been collected from the honeycomb and *not* the brood comb. Brood comb beeswax tends to be darker in colour and may contain impurities. This beautiful Somerset beeswax is the finest that I have ever encountered; it has a very fragrant scent, golden-yellow in colour and is perfectly filtered.

Wax - back in the day:
Egyptian artists used beeswax in their paintings by heating the beeswax on an iron plate to keep it liquid. Then they mixed powdered pigments with the liquid beeswax and applied it to canvas. The finished painting melted in the sun's heat and was "burned in" or blended, hence the word encaustic.  Romans used beeswax to waterproof walls, beeswax is also used to make mouthpieces for the didgeridoo and by the ancient Egyptian shipbuilders.

Nowadays, beeswax is used as an emulsifier in hair and skin care, for household items and to retain the integrity of the finest woods.

Our beeswax has been organically certified by the Soil Association of the UK and is purchased directly from beekeepers in Zambia.

Bentonite

(Sodium Bentonite)

Bentonite Clay

Quarry mined from untreated, naturally occurring deposits.

Creamy grey in colour with a very fine, velvety texture.
Odourless & Stainless.

Bentonite contains over 70 natural occurring trace minerals like:
Silica- 61.4% (required for strong healthy hair growth and skin tissue regeneration)
Aluminum- 18.1%
Iron- 3.5%
Sodium- 2.3%
Magnesium- 1.7%
Calcium- 0.04%
Titanium- 0.02%
Potassium- 0.01%
Moisture- 7.8%
pH - 8.3 - 9.1

Bentonite has a high percentage of naturally occurring Silica & Iron than most other naturally occuring clays.
Silica & Iron deficiency may lead to:

Skin becoming loose and dehydrated
Lack lustre hair
Poor bone development
Brittle nails

Effective & powerful when taken:
Externally as a poultice, naturally curly Afro hair mask, face and body mud pack, sprinkled in the bath, and/or to reduce swelling.
Internally as a supplement for those with mineral deficiencies.

What's in it for you?
Bentonite is packed full of minerals like Silica, Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Sodium and Magnesium. It can be used in the same way as Tuscan Green Clay.
Once combined with water, bentonite has an enormous surface area that stretches open like a highly porous sponge. The toxins are drawn into these spaces and then eliminated.

How does it do that?

"Clay has a negative electrical attraction for particles that are positively charged.  Most of the toxic poisons are positively charged.
These toxins are irresistibly drawn towards the clay. The very minuteness of the particles of Bentonite gives a large surface area in proportion to the volume used, thus enabling it to pick up many times its weight in positively charged particles."

Reference: Robert T. Martin, Ph.D.Mineralogist at Massachusetts's Institute of Technology - an authority on Bentonite.

"Bentonite can absorb pathogenic viruses, aflatoxin (a mold), and pesticides and herbicides including Paraquat and Roundup. The clay is eventually eliminated from the body with the toxins bound to its multiple surfaces."

Cacao/Cocoa Butter/Cocoa Solids/Cocoa Powder

(Theobroma Cacao)
Unrefined Food Grade Cocoa Butter
From Bean to Butter:

Young cocoa beanMature cocoa bean Sun dried cocoa bean with husk removed       Raw Unrefined Black Cocoa Butter          Pure Cocoa Powder     Black Cocoa Butter mixed with Raw Cocoa Powder

Once the Cacao Pod is ripe the beans are extracted, sun dried, the husk separated from the nib and ground into Cocoa liquor.

The Cocoa liquor contains approx. 53% Cocoa Butter and 47% Cocoa Solids. Cocoa liquor is compressed to obtain Cocoa butter and/or Cocoa solids. (Note: Cocoa liquor contains NO alcohol).

Our Unrefined Black Cocoa Butter is created straight after the cocoa pod has germinated.  The beans within the pod are roasted and the roots and shoots carbonized to create the dark colour.  Black Cocoa Butter is not really black, but more a dark, rich chocolate brown. It's non greasy with a decadent chocolate scent which is velvety smooth - it literally sinks right into your skin and hair.

To make Cocoa powder, part of the Cocoa Butter needs to be removed from the Cocoa Liquor. Cocoa in its purest form contains an antioxidant called epicatechin - a major monomeric polyphenols which helps to guard skin cells from free radical damage. The Cocoa used in our Goodies provides moisture and nourishment to your whole body. Cocoa also contains a certain amount of natural caffeine that provides a stimulating effect.

We use a variety of Cocoa in our Goodies:
Certified Organic and Fair Trade Green and Blacks 100% Pure Cocoa Powder (From the Trinitario and Criollo Cocoa Beans of Hispaniola). Fair Trade Unrefined Cocoa Butter from the Indigenous farmers/producers of the Brazilian Amazon. Fair Trade Organic Unrefined Cocoa Butter and Black Cocoa Butter from farming communities in Ghana.

Camellia Kissi Oil or Camellia Kissii Oil

(Camellia Kissi)
Camellia Kissi
Camellia Kissi Oil is a clear, viscose, light, non greasy anti-oxidant used for centuries by the Japanese to improve the overall texture of nails, hair, scalp and combination skin.

The oil is cold pressed from the seeds of the Camellia Kissi plant, using traditional Japanese methods of extraction. It's easily absorbed, has no detectable odour and gently protects without causing build up. Rich source of plant collagen that helps to prevent keloids and/or unsightly scar tissue - great for stretch marks.

This oil has traditionally been used in Japan for everything from sculpting the hair of the Geisha to cooking tempura.

The Japanese massage Camellia Kissi oil into the scalp and distribute it throughout the hair from root to tip; to lock in moisture and prevent dryness.

" "Oshima anko" (women of Oshima) were famous for their long black hair which they bound as "Inbonjiri-maki".  They carry water buckets on top of their heads twice per day - in the morning and in the evening. The "Mizu-kumi Anko" (The water dipping women of Oshima) are also a famous tourist attraction. Artist: Masao Maeda 1904-1974"

Camellia Kissi oil is rich in Oleic Acid (Omega 9) and as such is a very stable oil that resists rancidity. This emollient of unsaturated fatty acids is important to the formation and maintenance of the skin's lipid barrier. It's the primary oil that we, as humans, produce in our skin glands which is very similar to the natural oil or sebum that is produced in the sebaceous glands. Oleic acids are the most abundant fatty acids found in nature.

Camellia  Kissi contains over 85% Oleic acid, even more than that of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (which contains approximately 77%).

The Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of California in San Francisco, USA published a document titled "Mechanism of oleic acid-induced skin penetration enhancement in vivo in humans" which stated "OA (Oleic Acid) was found to exist in a liquid phase at all levels of the SC (Stratum Corneum) spectroscopically examined."

Our Camellia Kissi Oil is produce of Oshima, Japan.

Note:
Do not confuse Camellia Kissi with other Camellia Oils as there are over 100 different species of Camellia with varying properties for example:

Candelilla Wax

(Euphorbia Antisyphillitica/Euphorbia Cerifera)
Candelilla Wax
Comes from the stems of a small evergreen shrub. The cylindrical stems of the Candelilla produce a waxy coating that locks in moisture, which enables the shrub to adapt to the hot arid desert environment.

The method used to extract the wax does not involve any synthetic chemicals or heavy machinery just hot water. The wax is obtained by boiling the stems in water, this allows the wax to lift from the stems and float to the top it is then scooped out and air-dried until it becomes hard.

Candelilla wax is used primarily in the manufacture of chewing gum, rock candy, cosmetics, ointments, furniture polish, lubricants, Cold Process soap making and candle making. It was also used to make vinyl LPs, home insulation and coating for paper. Candelilla Wax is made up of about 29% Esters, 9% Free Acids, 51% Hydrocarbons with the rest made up of plant alcohols and cholesterols. We use Candelilla Wax in our Lippy Puckers because it acts as a sunscreen, prevents moisture loss, smoothes and conditions dry skin.

Our Candelilla Wax is produce of Mexico.

Chlorella

(Chlorella Vulgaris)

What Is It

Chlorella is a single-celled algae that thrives in fresh water. It has been around for more than 2 billion years and has been known to be the very first form of a plant exhibiting a well-defined nucleus. Its name was derived from the Greek words chloros which means green and ella which means small. This spherical-shaped algae holds green photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll-a and -b in parts of its cell called chloroplast and is 2 to 10 m in width. Chlorella has the highest concentration of chlorophyll of any plant known to date.

Through a process called photosynthesis and the presence of water, carbon dioxide, minerals and sunlight, chlorella reproduces at an incredible rate. Its a natural food and energy source that is rich in protein and other key nutrients.

Chlorella Growth Factor

The Chlorella Growth Factor or CGF is a major part of chlorella taken from its nuclei that stimulates growth. It is composed of a nucleotide-peptide complex of substances like amino acids, peptides, polysaccharides, nucleic acids, and beta glucans that provides an extra boost and replenishes the body - from head to toe. According to research, CGF is created during the most intense photosynthesis activity in chlorella that allows it to multiply quickly. CGF can only be found in chlorella.

Skin care and Hair care Benefits:

ANTI-AGEING - CGF forms key components of nucleic acids (RNA and DNA) also known as the blueprints of life responsible for cellular renewal. The nucleic acid levels decreases and significantly drops upon reaching your early twenties which can lead to inevitable skin aging. It is therefore important to have RNA and DNA supplementation that can be best achieved through CGF based products. CGF promotes rejuvenation and regeneration of the cells in the body improving overall health.

COLLAGEN Collagen is a protein synthesized by the body that supports and keeps connective tissues together. The body produces low levels of collagen as it gets older which causes decreased joint mobility and the appearance of fine lines. According to clinical studies, expression levels of activity in collagen with the help of CGF increased by 333% when consumed at a concentration of 1%. It has also been found that CGF also protects collagen and elastic fibres from damaging enzymes.

SKIN / SCALP TISSUE REGENERATION Clinical tests show that chlorella is an excellent firming active ingredient in terms of dermal and epidermal structure and on the epidermal-dermal junction. Any skin care or hair care product that shows 1% dermochlorella (Chlorella Vulgaris Extract) in its ingredient list can assist in improving the firmness and tone of the skin and scalp.

Coffee Essential Oil

(Coffea Arabica)
Coffee Essential Oil
When brewed, coffee has the same 4.5 pH balance as our skin, but it doesn't stop there. Coffee Oil also has antioxidant and anti mutagenic properties that reduce skin allergies and calms the scalp. It's a known stimulatant that doubles as a UV filter and helps to retain moisture.

Coffee is derived from Caffa which is a province of Abyssinia (Ethiopia). It was introduced to Arabia in the 15th century and supplied the world's coffee for over two hundred years. It wasn't until the 17th century when the Dutch introduced the humble coffee plant to Batavia. Then in 1714 it was presented to Louis XIV of France.  Coffee then found it's way around the world and back again.

The most aromatic coffee beans can be found in countries like:

  • Columbia
  • Cuba
  • Brazil
  • Africa

The INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredient) of Coffee is Coffea Arabica which refers back its roots - Arabia.

Cucumber seed oil helps to prevent water retention which in turn reduces swelling under the eyes, inflamed sunburned skin and dermatitis.

The oil of the cucumber seed is an excellent natural source of silica, needed to improve the health and complexion of skin and is purported to strengthen and promote new hair growth. This is due to its naturally high silicon and sulphur content. Silica is a major building block of hair that provides elasticity whilst reducing hair loss and hair breakage.

Scrummy topical benefits of Cucumber:
- Great source of silica required to maintain and improve the complexion and health of skin cell tissues.
- Known for its anti inflammatory, soothing and healing properties.
- Helps to prevent pimples, blackheads and dry skin.
- An excellent skin and hair tonic.
- Brightens dull complexions, to give you glowing skin.
- Purported to remove dark circles from around the eye area.
- Improves dullness of the skin and minimizes the appearance of blotches and age spots.

Nutrients - Cucumbers also contain:
Potassium
Sodium
Magnesium
Chlorine
Fluorine

Brief history:
Cucumbers are available in a variety of colours (from light to dark green), shapes and sizes. The humble Cucumber is believed to originate from Northern India. However, it was held in high regard to the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks who used this prized food for trade. Cucumber is now cultivated in most tropical areas around the world including but not limited to India, China, Africa, Central and South America, South East Asia and the Caribbean.

Our 100% pure Cucumber Seed Oil is steam distilled from the seeds of the Cucumber. Our Cucumber Peel Powder (10:1) is taken from the dark green flesh of ripe cucumbers, then air dried and hand ground into a fine powder.

Golden Jojoba Oil

(Simmondsia Chinensis)
Golden Jojoba Oil
Jojoba is a multi-stemmed evergreen woody shrub that produces male and female flowers on separate plants. The fruit of the female is green with elongated acorn shaped seeds that turn brown and produce the golden liquid wax. Jojoba seeds contain up to 55% oil composed of esters of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and long chain mono-unsaturated alcohols but it's not a fat or oil.

It's an odourless, colourless and very stable light moisturiser that resembles human sebum secretion and discourages blemishes.

Golden Jojoba is an ideal lubricant for skin and hair. We use Organic Golden Jojoba in our Lippy Puckers and other Goodies.

Our Golden Jojoba Oil is produce of Argentina.

Honey

(Miel)
Honey
Honey is one of the most naturally hydrating, acid balanced skin and hair food. It's composed of a variety of sugars or glucose (also known as dextrose), lactic acid, beta carotene and trace levels of amino acids, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, sulphur, vitamins and enzymes.
Note:
The nutrients contained within honey are dependent on the nectar that the bees collect.

Honey's humectant properties nourish and moisturises everything it touches. In Thailand honey is used on open wounds to soften the scar tissue and encourage new skin growth. This may be due to the fact that there is a high concentration of sugars in honey that prevents the growth of bacteria on open wounds but it has never been scientifically proven.

Self preserving
The low pH of honey prevents the existence and growth of micro organisms making honey a self preserving natural ingredient.

Honey concerns
i) Honey should not be used on infants under the age of 12 months for fear of infant botulism.
Clostridium bacteria may be one of the causes of infant botulism. This bacteria is said to be found in certain types of foods like honey. Infant botulism may occur in children from the age of six months or under.

ii) If you're allergic to pollen then you may be allergic to honey - a patch test is always recommended.

Well I'll Bee!
All honey bees belong to the Apis gene regardless of whether the bee is from Sunny Africa or Bonny Scotland. Some bees have access to particular areas of fields where only one kind of flower grows.
For example:
- Clover
- Goldenrod
- Heather
- Basswood
- Chamomile
- Lavender
etc...

It is the flowering plant (nectar or plant sap) that gives honey its distinct flavour, colour, extra nourishment and/or individual beneficial properties.
Bees can also create their own blends of honey from various flowering plants in any one particular field.

Bees add a lot of moisture and enzyme compounds to nectar, the sugars of the honey nectar are broken down to form simple sugars - some of which are converted into a naturally occurring acid called glyconic acid (hydroxyacetic acid). This is what gives each particular type of honey its rich distinctiveness and flavour from mild to bland to full on powerful  to sickly pungent.
(Note: There are synthetically made gluconic acids available too, so read the label and ask questions if you're unsure).

The colour of the honeys can range from deep black to beige or white.  Each of the colours are created in the nectar of the plant, it is then transported back by the bee to the hive, then the bees do their natural stuff by reducing the moisture level. When the honey is darker it means that it has come from a nectar source where the flowering plant produces a darker plant sap.

Types of honey we use:

Runny (liquid extracted) honey

Runny Honey
This is when the liquid has been hand squeezed or mechanically extracted out of the entire honeycomb. Then it's strained through a cloth to remove any particles,  the actual comb is melted down and sold as beeswax because the comb can not be re-used by the bees once it has been squeezed.
Fair Trade
Our Fair Trade runny Honey is Produce of Chile. Fair trade means that the co-operatives and suppliers making our products are paid at a fair rate and are provided with a pension plan, vacation, sick pay, family leave and overtime.
We use this in our Rhassoul Deep Condishes.

The main floral sources of the Chilean Honey we use in our Goodies are native to the Chilean Ulmo Blossom (Eucryphia Cordifolia), together with wildflowers such as Echium, Rosa, Lotus and Quilaya (Quillay). The Ulmo can be identified by its delightfully fragrant backnote, reminiscent of Violets.

Comb honey also called Chunky honey

Comb Honey
One particular beekeeper used this method to get combed honey.

She would cut out pieces of the honeycomb, place the pieces in a glass container, then remove the white caps from each cell of the other honeycomb pieces and pour the liquid honey around the honeycomb in the glass container. This would allow the beekeeper to reuse the honey comb so that the bees can fill it up with more honey. This way the same comb is used over and over again.

Cut-comb honey

Honey Comb
Sometimes with Acacia honey you will see that the beekeeper has left the cut honey comb in the honey jar - great marketing/selling effect because you can use the comb later for teas, lotion and potion infusions or melt it down and make your own beeswax from it.

Granulated (creamy to white in colour and firm) honey
Basically honey where sugar crystals have formed under a controlled process and then hand blended or churned to a creamy texture. The Organic Clover Creamed Honey that we use in our Lippy Pucker Original comes from the perfumed clover of Actearoa in New Zealand and has been certified Organic by the Soil Association of the United Kingdom.

Each of the hives are managed to organic standards - free from harmful chemical residue. It has a deliciously mild, buttery flavour and smooth texture perfect for our yummy Lippys.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil

(Glycine Soja)
Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil
This vegan ingredient is created by a chemical process called hydrogenation. A number of hydrogen atoms are added to the Soya Bean Oil this changes its chemical make-up from unsaturated to saturated (or liquid to solid). Soya bean oil is a great source of linoleic acid, protein, minerals, vitamins (A, K and E) and lecithin. We use this ingredient in our Creamy Café Latte.

Our Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil is a produce of the United States of America

Iron Oxide

Iron Oxide

Universally known as Hematite or rust, iron oxide is a naturally occurring mineral compound. Which is in fact, an oxidised iron, composed of iron and oxygen.

The utilisation of iron oxides can be traced back to ancient times where it was used in festivities and religious ceremonies as tattoo inks for face and body. This mineral provides a variety of colours and hues which can be used to add pigments to paints, concretes and beauty products. This inorganic compound has been created from purified, oxidised iron.

Iron oxides are used in cosmetic applications to provide desirable pigmentation in beauty products. Iron oxides impart colouring agents to mineral makeup and are classified into three major colour groups: the yellow iron oxide (yellow), colcothar (red), black iron oxide (black).

Unlike synthetic dyes, iron oxides are moisture resistant which means the colours it creates do not bleed or disappear. The compounds of iron oxides allow the mineral makeup to glide on the skin which allows effortless blending and buffing.

Jasmine Absolute

(Jasminum Sambac)
Jasmine Sambac
Jasmine belongs to the same family as the humble olive, the Oleaceae plant species. Jasmine is a climbing shrub grown all over the world. The fragrant white flowers are picked at night as the darkness protects the powerful aroma. The process known as effleurage is then used to extract the precious oil, known as Jasmine absolute.

Jasmine absolute is considered to be one the most precious oils and is extremely expensive because of the abundant amount of flowers required to produce a small quantity of the dark orangey-brown, viscous liquid. Jasmine absolute has a voluptuous; intensely rich, deep, floral aroma and its flowers buds are useful for the treatment of ulcers, boils, skin and eye disorders.

Known for its aphrodisiac properties Jasmine is also purported to facilitate birth and "warm the womb". Jasmine is recognised for its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, sedative and antispasmodic properties.

Mica

Mica

Mica is the most common ingredient found in mineral makeup.

Its name has been derived from the Latin word micare which means a crumb that glitters. They are mined from igneous and metamorphic rocks and are used for various applications in the electrical, automotive, construction and industrial industry since the 19th century.

One of Micas distinguished features is its shimmering and pearlescent appearance that remains constant even when its being grounded into finely milled powder. It has monoclinic properties, similar to most crystals, which can reflect light off its surface which is why it also became appealing to the cosmetics industry.

Crushed and pulverised mica exhibits a very natural sheen when added to foundations, lipsticks, eyeliner, blushers, nail polish and in many different kinds of makeup products.

Powdered micas aesthetic contribution to mineral makeup is its light-reflective quality that gives a lit-from-within glow that looks very natural. It is an ingredient that adds a velvety and silky feel to mineral makeup which gives a gliding effect when applied on the skin.

Mica also provides skin care benefits as it evens out the complexion and buffs away redness and pigmentation from the skin with continuous use.

Organic Andiroba Oil

(Carapa Guianensis)

Organic Andiroba Oil

This rich, light creamy oil takes it's name from Nheengatu nhandi rob, meaning "bitter oil".

Andiroba trees are part of the Mahogany family found in tropical Brazil, Guyana and Colombia.

Each Andiroba tree produces small semi-circular seeds that have similar properties to that of Neem oil but without the characteristic un-friendly scent.

How it's made:
To extract the oil from the seeds they first have to be boiled and left to ferment for approximately 25 days. The pulp is separated and shaped into a round spherical object then placed on a sloping surface in the sun (or shade) for a few weeks to allow the oil to naturally seep out. Pure Andiroba oil will congeal, like butter, in cooler climates. Simply place the sealed bottle in a bowl of warm water to liquefy. Andiroba oil contains a group of natural alpha-hydroxy acids that increases collagen and gives effective relief for certain skin ailments like psoriasis.

It's a great source of fatty acids such as:

  • Linoleic, a polyunsaturated essential fatty acid required for the development of healthy skin and cell membranes, reducing puffiness and swelling. Its EFA (vitamin F) content helps to hydrate dry, parched skin.
  • Palmitoleic, an unsaturated fatty acid that contains high amounts of glycerides (a natural conditioner that imparts incredible softness to skin and hair).

Due to the presence of a phytochemical called Limonoid, Andiroba oil is also been considered an anti-inflammatory.
"Currently limonoids are under investigation for a wide variety of therapeutic effects such as antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, antineoplastic and antimalarial."

Organic Babassu Oil or Babacu Oil

(Orbignya Phalerata)
Organic Babassu Oil or Babacu Oil

Comes from the fruits that grow in clusters and hang from the tall Brazilian feather-leaf Babassu Palm tree. During harvest time (usually around August to November) Babassu breakers collect the Babassu fruit seeds, crack them open and remove the meat which is then cold pressed into a light, nourishing, edible vegetable oil. In Brazil, Babassu oil is often used for cooking, soap making, to treat eczema, itchy, dry and inflamed skin and scalp conditions. Babassu Oil, on its own, is a great moisturizer for both dry and oily skin and *does not* leave an oily residue. In fact, it works with the body's natural oils (sebum) to leave your skin feeling powdery soft.

This is due to its high content of Vitamin E (anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant) and Phytosterols (which stimulates the formation and growth of new cells).

Babassu Oil adds a sparkling glow to curly tresses restoring strength and elasticity from roots to tip. When used as a skin moisturiser Babassu Oil is feather light, melts to the touch and doesn't leave an oily residue. We've added it to our shampoo bars because it cleanses without drying or stripping your curls of its natural oils, leaving hair soft and noticeably strong.

Organic Copaiba
A rich natural oil with a slightly spicy somewhat woody aroma.
It has a deep natural brownish resin colour which accounts for up to 60% of this gorgeous balsam and contains the highest amounts of beta caryophyllene (55 percent) of any known balsam.

In Brazil, Copaiba is widely used for its purported antiseptic properties and as a topical antibiotic to treat skin inflammation.

Copaiba also has a high content of naturally occurring essential fatty acids (EFAs - the building blocks of healthy skin tissue) as well as an abundance of the natural germicidal agent, beta-carophyllene. The active properties of Copaiba (caryophyllene and calamenene) are the most effective and best known phytochemicals (plant chemicals) in the world.

Copaiba oil is the best known source of caryophyllene (nature's potent defender against unwanted invaders that attack our skin) - great for treating a variety of skin conditions - including topical ulcers, eczema and psoriasis.

Copaiba is derived from the deteriorated cell walls of the copaiba tree trunk. The oleoresin accumulates within the cavities over a long period of time. When it comes to harvest this rich balsam all the farmers have to do is tap or drill holes into the wood of the trunk and collect the resin that drips out. Copaiba is the most sustainable rainforest resource that is harvested without cutting through the entire tree or destroying the forest in which it grows.

Organic MSM

(Methyl Sulfonyl Methane / Methyl Sulphonyl Methane)
Organic MSM
MSM originates from the ocean, in the form of plankton, which releases sulphur compounds into the water the compounds are released into the atmosphere and converted into atmospheric sulphur. This falls to earth in the form of rain which is then absorbed by plants. Plants have the ability to take in the sulphur through the roots where it is concentrated 100 fold.

MSM sulphur is a non-toxic organic white crystalline powder that is found virtually everywhere especially in our red blood cells and within the keratin fibers of protein in our hair and skin. A lack of sulphur can weaken the fiber causing irregular sebum activity on the surface of the skin and scalp which may result in dandruff, dry skin and/or brittle hair and nails. Topical application of MSM assists with the rehydration and detoxification of the cell fibres by allowing water and nutrients into the cells and toxins to flow out. This is necessary for the production of collagen and keratin - protein necessary for the health and maintenance of skin, nails and hair.

MSM Sulphur is a natural component of various foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, dried beans, milk, eggs, tea, coffee, garlic, dried horsetail herb, chocolate, seafood, meat (approximately 2% sulphur), amino acids (L-methionine, L-cysteine, L-cystine andtaurine), wheat germ and whole grains. MSM is a sulfur compound but NOT a sulfite and should not be confused with other ingredients like sulfa or sulfate.

Our Organic MSM is produce of the United Kingdom.

Organic Sapote Fruit Seed Oil

(Pouteria Sapota)
(aka: Zapote, Mamey Sapote, Zapayul, Sapayul)
Organic Sapote Seed Oil
This orange coloured, non- greasy, luxuriously soft, smooth, thick, and creamy textured oil is cold press from the large, shiny black seed of the Sapote fruit.

Rich in vitamins A, C, plant proteins, carbohydrates, iron, potassium, calcium Mamey sapote is similar in shape to an American football and grows throughout the West Indies, Central and South America. The brownish skin of the fruit is a cross between sandpaper and peach fuzz but the fleshy-pulp surrounding the seed is absolutely delicious! It's often eaten fresh and used to make sherbets, ice creams, preserves, milkshakes and smoothies. The natural scent of the Sapote Seed oil is rather a unique mixture of cherries and almonds.

According to research conducted at Purdue University
"In Santo Domingo, the seed kernel oil is used as a skin ointment and as a hair dressing believed to stop falling hair. In Mexico, 2 or 3 pulverized kernels are combined with 10 oz (300 g) castor oil for application to the hair. In 1970, clinical tests at the University of California at Los Angeles failed to reveal any hair-growth promoting activity but confirmed that the oil of sapote seed is effective in stopping hair-fall caused by seborrheic dermatitis."

Organic Sesame Seed Oil

(Sesamum Indicum)
Organic Sesame Seed Oil
Aka Gingilli or Gingelly oil, which has been known from ancient Egypt to the Indian continent, as a soothing, gentle emollient. Sesame Seed oil comes from the lovely annual shrub with white bell-shaped flowers that's grown worldwide, especially in India, Africa, Europe and South America.

Rich and almost odourless organic sesame seed oil is cold pressed from the tiny sesame seeds and is very stable.

It contains an antioxidant system consisting of:
Sesamol
AND
Sesamolinol
Both formed from sesamolin.

Organic Sesame Seed Oil packs a massive nutritious punch.
Just 100 grams of Organic Sesame seed oil contains approximately:
Vitamin A - 15 I.U. - to improve the texture, health and smoothness of both hair and skin
Vitamin B1 in the form of Thiamine 1.07 mg - increases the blood circulation
Niacin - 2.7 mg - a skin/scalp conditioning agent
Calcium - 580 mg - super emollient and anti-aging benefits
Potassium - 360 mg - an humectant that improves skin/scalp moisture and hair texture
It also contains linoleic acid and alpha linoleic acid as well as lecithin (found in all living organisms and is known as a moisturising emollient).

Sesame seed oil holds prominence in Ayurvedic medicine:
It's the primary oil used in the Indian massage, Abhyanga.
This massage focuses on over 100 different points of the body referred to as marma points.
Abhyanga is said to improve energy flow and help to rid the body of impurities.

The ancient massage consists of the oil being rubbed all over the body and left to soak into the skin/scalp for five to fifteen minutes before taking a warm bath or shower. This allows the oil to be absorbed, nourish and detoxify the tissue cells.

The application of warm water is important as it opens the pores, allowing the oil to permeate further into the skin's layers.

Fact:
It's been cultivated for over 4,000 years and was found in Tutankhamens tomb, in Mesopotamia.
Women of ancient Babylon ate Halva, a mix of honey and sesame seeds to prolong their youth and beauty.
Roman soldiers would eat the sesame seeds with honey to give them extra energy and strength.

Our Organic Sesame Seed Oil is produce of France and has been certified Organic by the Soil Association of the United Kingdom.

Panthenol

(dl-Panthenol)

Panthenol Provitamin B5

What It is?

Panthenol is the alcohol analog of pantothenic acid derived from vitamin B5, also known as "pro-vitamin B5." Its a highly viscous transparent liquid at room temperature. This naturally-occurring material has several benefits and uses which makes it a very common ingredient in skincare, hair care and makeup products. Panthenols topical applications were first recognized during the 1950s when it was used in scientific research at the New York University Post Graduate Medical School involving patients suffering burns and wounds.

Medicinal, Skincare and Hair Care Benefits

1.)   Panthenol is a very popular ingredient in the hair care industry as it is generally included in many formulations of almost all hair products available on the market today. This vitamin works by coating the hair strand to provide significant volume and fullness to hair. When panthenol coats the hair, it works as a humectant which draws and seals moisture deep into the hair cortex and keep it hydrated. It also penetrates the shaft to strengthen the hair to avoid the most common hair problems like breakage, split ands and hair fall caused by thermal styling products. Panthenol patches up and repairs parts of the hair that are severely affected by the harsh chemicals from perming and colouring products.

2.)   Panthenol works as a handy solution to unhealthy, breakage-prone fingernails. It forms a protective barrier on the nail plate making it strong, sturdy and chip-free.

3.)   Lip plumpers also enjoy the contribution of panthenol in their formulations because of its natural skin plumping action that doesnt not irritate or sting the lips like what most chemical-based lip plumpers can do. This same plumping action is also being utilized by many anti-aging products for it makes the skin appear smoother and firmer which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

4.)   Hand creams and moisturisers infused with panthenol is very helpful during the cold months for this vitamin deeply moisturizes the skin. It helps the skin maintain optimal health to heal blisters, sores, chapping and cracked skin caused by the unforgiving low temperatures and dry air of the winter season in no time.

5.)   Pantothenic acid is being used in the pharmaceutical industry for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It has also been found to lower cholesterol levels in the blood.

Sericite

Sericite

Sericite is a fine grained mineral that applies with a silky matte finish on the skin. It is often compared to mica due to their similarities in shape and chemical makeup however; sericite has a smoother and softer texture than mica because it has significant hydration in its composition. Sericite is widely used as a base for mineral makeup like eye shadows and foundations, as replacement for talc, because of how it reflects light in order to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and pores without clogging the pores.

Sericite is a mineral which exemplifies similarities with white mica in terms of shape and chemical structure. Its name was derived from the Latin word sericus which describes the silky attributes of rocks with rich amounts of sericite in them.

It comes in a silver white powder form which is being used as an extender to mineral makeup because of how it makes mineral makeup glide on smoothly on the skin while blurring out the appearance of pores, fine lines and other skin imperfections.

Additional Information:

Sericite mica is a natural powder (aluminium potassium silicate) similar to white mica with a fine grain size and silky shine.

We use untreated sericite mica because it is colourless and will increase the translucency of our foundation, giving you a more natural look. Sericite reflects light to reduce the appearance of large pores and fine lines that wont clog your pores. We use it in our fair to dark foundations colours and will continue to use it in our new eye shadows shades

Sericite:

- Is great for light to medium coverage, throughout the day, and is suitable for normal to dry skin.

- Offers very little opacity (or whiteness) and is used to o make a colour lighter, to cover up imperfections.

- Is virtually colourless and increases translucency. Used on its own, as a base, it's almost invisible once it's applied.

- Eliminates the ashy-dull colour that can occur when an untreated sericite product absorbs the sebum (the skin's natural oil).

- Offers great "slip" and glides on effortless, feeling silky as you apply it and continuing to do so long after application.

- Remains on your skin and offers great adhesion.

- Helps keep a consistent makeup colour throughout the day and will not blotch regardless of excessive sebum excretion.

Sweet Almond Wax

(Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis)

Sweet Almond Wax

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium Dioxide (also known as Titanium Oxide) is a naturally occurring mineral that is obtained from the principal mineral sources of titanium e.g.: ilmenite, anatase and rutile.

It is mined for a wide range of applications in the food, plastic and cosmetics industry because of its resistance to corrosion and ability to protect products from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. It's also a highly reflective mineral, think of a sparkling diamond with reflective like properties.

it decreases the chances of free-radical production in the deeper layers of the skin. Titanium dioxide is a core component for sunscreen and makeup products in order to protect the skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. It is also used to add substantial opacity and white pigmentation to cosmetics.

Titanium dioxide is used to provide significant sun protection in mineral makeup because of its outstanding ultraviolet (UV) light absorbing properties that prevents wrinkling and hyperpigmentation from sun damage.

This same quality also prevents mineral makeup from oxidizing or turning orange under ultraviolet light. This ingredient works as a natural opacifier to increase the coverage of mineral makeup which effectively conceals blemishes and skin imperfections. In addition, titanium dioxide also acts as a colourant which gives a creamy pearlescent sheen to beauty products.

We do not use nano-sized titanium dioxide in any of our products.
